Pokémon League Challenges & League Cups
Ready to take your Pokémon TCG skills to the next level? Pokémon League Challenges and League Cups are official Play! Pokémon tournaments where players can compete, test their decks, earn Championship Points, and work toward qualifying for larger Pokémon events!
🏆 What Is a League Challenge?
A League Challenge is an entry-level competitive Pokémon TCG tournament. It’s a great place to get your feet wet with competitive Pokémon or to practice your tournament skills in a lower-pressure environment.
League Challenges:
• Are official Play! Pokémon tournaments
• Award Championship Points to eligible players based on their finish
• Use the current tournament-legal format
• Are run using Pokémon’s official tournament software
• Follow official Play! Pokémon tournament rules
• Are open to players who meet the event’s age and eligibility requirements
Think of a League Challenge as a great stepping stone between regular League play and larger competitive events.
🥇 What Is a League Cup?
A League Cup is a larger competitive Pokémon TCG tournament. League Cups are similar in structure to League Challenges but generally attract more players and offer more Championship Points.
League Cups:
• Are official Play! Pokémon Championship Point events
• Award more Championship Points than League Challenges
• Use the current tournament-legal format
• Follow official Play! Pokémon tournament rules
• Are run using Pokémon’s official tournament software
• Give players valuable experience preparing for larger events such as Regional Championships
League Cups are a great opportunity for experienced players looking to compete at a higher level, while still being a local event.
⭐ What Are Championship Points?
Championship Points, or CP, are points earned by placing well at eligible Play! Pokémon events.
Players accumulate CP throughout the competitive season. The number of points awarded depends on the event, the player’s finish, and other event-specific factors.
League Challenges award a smaller number of Championship Points, while League Cups award more.
For players working toward major competitive goals, every event can be an opportunity to build their season total.
👤 What Do I Need to Participate?
To participate in a League Challenge or League Cup, players should:
• Have a Pokémon Trainer Central account in good standing
• Have a Play! Pokémon Player ID
• Be eligible to participate in the event based on Play! Pokémon rules
• Bring a legal tournament deck for the current format
• Have a deck list prepared according to tournament requirements
• Bring all necessary cards and accessories for their deck
• Arrive before the posted registration/check-in deadline
Pokémon Trainer Central & Player ID
A Player ID is used to track your participation in Play! Pokémon events and your Championship Points.
If you don’t already have a Player ID, our staff can help point you in the right direction for getting one.
Players should also make sure their Player ID is connected to their Pokémon Trainer Central account so their event participation and Championship Points can be properly associated with their account.
🃏 What Does My Deck Need to Look Like?
Your deck must follow the current Pokémon TCG tournament rules and the format listed for the event.
This means:
• Your deck must contain the required number of cards
• Your cards must be legal for the event’s format
• Your deck must follow Pokémon’s current deck construction rules
• You must submit a deck list when required
• Your physical deck must match your submitted deck list
Standard format rotates periodically, so always check the current legality of your cards before an event.
📋 Do I Need a Deck List?
Yes. For Championship Point events, players should expect to provide a deck list.
Your deck list needs to accurately represent the deck you are playing. The cards you bring to the tournament must match your submitted list.
We recommend preparing your deck list before arriving at the event so check-in goes as smoothly as possible.
⏰ What Should I Expect at the Event?
When you arrive:
- Check in and register for the tournament.
- Make sure your Player ID information is correct.
- Submit your deck list if required.
- Find your assigned seat and opponent when pairings are posted.
- Play your matches according to the tournament rules.
- Check the standings throughout the event.
- Stay until you have completed all of your rounds or officially dropped from the tournament.
Tournament rounds, number of rounds, and match structure can vary depending on attendance and the specific event.
🧑⚖️ Is This Different From Regular Pokémon League?
Yes!
Regular Pokémon League is designed to be a welcoming, casual environment where players can play, trade, learn, practice, and meet other Pokémon fans.
League Challenges and League Cups are sanctioned competitive tournaments. Matches count toward tournament standings, and successful finishes can earn Championship Points.
That doesn’t mean you have to be an expert to participate! League Challenges in particular are a great way to learn what competitive Pokémon TCG is like.
